The position

prospects of the

Colony, of which Mr. Mitchell has had

and intimate experience

entirely changed by the Treaty of Nanking. When Captain Elliot took possession

of Hongkong in 1841, after his convention with Kishen, it was naturally regarded

as

the future centre of our

commerce.

Indeed,

independent of

its being a general

harbour

for Canton, our trade

would again be carried on

without being endangered

as heretofore at Whampoa. Kishen's Convention

did not guard against

the occurrence of

the causes of former interruptions, and
